FAQ
Common questions
How big can a granny flat be in WA?
Under the WA Residential Design Codes, an ancillary dwelling (granny flat) is generally limited to 70 m² of internal living area on a residential lot. Your council's local rules can vary, so we check this at the start.
Does someone in my family have to live in it?
No. Since 2019, WA's R-Codes allow a granny flat to be rented to anyone, not only family members, subject to your local council's planning rules.
Do I need approval?
Yes. A granny flat needs a building permit, and some lots also need development approval. We guide you through what your council requires.
